Hemsö fästning is located on the island of Hemsö, about ten kilometers north of Härnösand.

If you’re driving northbound, follow the signs from E4 shortly north of Älandsbro. Turn right and follow the road for about 10 kilometers until you reach the ferry terminal.

If you’re coming from the south, turn left before Älandsbro. The ferry can accommodate about 30 cars and is free of charge.

You can find the link to the departure times below the text. After a pleasant boat ride of 6-7 minutes to the island, keep left when you drive off the ferry and follow the road for about 4 kilometers.

Then, turn right at the sign for Hemsö fästning. The gravel road you’re now driving on is a bit winding but wide enough for cars to pass each other. It stretches for about 4.5 kilometers up the western side of Storråberget.

Wildlife is very active in this area, with moose, deer, grouse, hares, and lynx, so drive carefully for the chance to see them. When driving onto the ferry, it’s important to drive as close to the car in front of you as possible so that everyone can fit on the ferry.
