Coastal Artillery’s Peacetime Organization

To be able to produce combat units and maintain equipment during peace and war, there were several coastal artillery defense units with training regiments. Furthermore, there was a joint combat school for the coastal artillery, called the Coastal Artillery Gunnery School.

The description is taken from the brochure Coastal Artillery Organization and Tactics, published by the Swedish Armed Forces in 1985, and describes the organization as of 1985.

SK/KA 1
The Stockholm Coastal Artillery Defense included the Vaxholm Coastal Artillery Regiment, SK/KA1, located in Vaxholm, northwest of Stockholm.

SK/KA1 was responsible for producing several Coastal Artillery Brigades as well as several independent Coastal Artillery units, including most of the naval mobile units within the Coastal Artillery. Some training was centralized at SK/KA1. The Coastal Ranger School, responsible for training coastal ranger personnel, and the Coastal Artillery Mine School, responsible for training personnel in mine and boat duties, were both located at SK/KA1.

BK/KA 2
The Blekinge Coastal Artillery Defense included the Karlskrona Coastal Artillery Regiment, BK/KA2, located in Karlskrona, Blekinge.

BK/KA2 was responsible for producing several Coastal Artillery Brigades and several independent Coastal Artillery units, as well as most of the land-mobile units within the Coastal Artillery. Some training was centralized at BK/KA2. The Artillery Battalion, responsible for training personnel in mobile artillery and missile duties, and the Coastal Artillery Maintenance School, responsible for training mechanics, technicians for various weapon systems, and personnel in catering services, were both located at BK/KA2.

GK/KA 3
Gotland’s Coastal Artillery Defense included the Gotland Coastal Artillery Regiment, GK/KA3, located at Fåresund in northern Gotland.

GK/KA3 was primarily responsible for producing a Coastal Artillery Brigade and several independent Coastal Artillery units.

MKV/KA 4
The Military Command West, with the Älvsborg Coastal Artillery Regiment, MKV/KA4, was located in Gothenburg.

MKV was a joint authority for the navy and coastal artillery, the navy. MKV/KA4 was responsible for producing, in terms of Coastal Artillery units, a brigade and several independent Coastal Artillery units. MKV/KA4 also housed the Navy’s Medical School, which trained personnel for medical units, and the Coastal Artillery Radar School, which trained radar operators and technicians for radar and fire control.

NK/KA 5
The Coastal Artillery Regiment in Härnösand, NK/KA5, was responsible for the Coastal Artillery defense in Norrland.

NK/KA5 primarily produced a Coastal Artillery brigade and several independent Coastal Artillery units.

KAS
The Coastal Artillery Shooting School, KAS, was located on Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm. The school was mostly deployed to various training regiments and shooting ranges throughout the year.

KAS conducted central courses for both professional and reserve officers.
